Periodontics
Periodontics is the dental specialty that is responsible for preventing and treating diseases that affect both gum and bone. The main periodontal diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis. To prevent gingivitis, proper oral hygiene is necessary by using a good toothbrush with a proper brushing technique as well as the use of dental floss that will remove bacterial plaque and avoid calculus formation.
Professional cleaning will help us prevent disease by eliminating bacteria and calculus. If the gum disease progresses, it can also affect the bone. In which case, we would have to perform root curettages and smoothing to stop its progression.
There is a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planning, root surface debridement and regenerative procedures in which we perform a small and painless surgical procedure where we place a graft to cover the recession in order to offer a natural appearance to the gumline.
